PITKIN was born in 1735 in East Hartford, Connecticut. He died on 23 Jun
1775 in East Hartford, Connecticut. Joshua lived on the Windsor road in East
Hartford Center, across the road from the house of his brother Nathaniel, and
next to the Olmsted Carriage shop. As there is no mention of Joshua in the merchantile
history of East Hartford, it is likely that he was a farmer. He died when his
children were young, and the oldest son, Martin, seems to have assumed some responsibility
for the guardianship of the youngest son, Levi. All of Joshua's sons moved to
Marshfield, Vermont before 1800, and three of them remained there. Although
he never visited Marshfield, Joshua's family was prominent in the settling and
early growth of that town. Parents: Caleb PITKIN and
Dorothy HILLS.He was married to Anna STANLEY in 1762 in East Hartford, Connecticut. Joshua and Anna were second cousins. Children were: Martin PITKIN, Joshua PITKIN, Levi PITKIN, Caleb PITKIN, Anna PITKIN, Hon. Stephen PITKIN, Levi PITKIN. Joshua
PITKIN was born on 11 Jul 1765 in East Hartford, Connecticut. He died on
24 Jun 1847 in Marshfield, Vermont. He was buried in Eaton Cemetery, Marshfield,
Vermont. Joshua Pitkin came with his brother Stephen to Marshfield on March
1, 1795 with his wife and three children. He was appointed the first Justice
of the Peace in town on August 23, 1799. The following March, he called the
first town meeting which was held at his log house, on March 10, 1800, and continued
on the 24th. He was elected auditor of accounts at this meeting. The following
year, Joshua purchased from the school district one table for two bushels and
two quarts of wheat, and one chair for three pecks, four quarts of wheat. In
a 1796 petition to the Vermont Legislature, Joshua signed his name as the owner
of 2000 acres in Marshfield, and also signed as 'Joshua Pitkin & Company,'
(perhaps a partnership with his brother Stephen) the owner of another 2000 acres.
On September 24, 1803, Joshua raised a large two story house, and he commenced keeping a tavern there in 1805, the first public house in Marshfield. By 1807, he was sugaring, and when he began to tap his sugarplace on April 4 of that year, the snow was four and one-half feet deep. Also in that year, Joshua was elected selectman. In 1811, a flood flattened the grass in his meadows which would have made fifteen tons of hay. Joshua kept a journal of his life and business which was last known to be in the possession of his daughter, Miss Anna Pitkin of Montpelier before she died in 1875. He was very lame late in life, and was killed by being run over by a loaded team when he was 82 years old. Parents: Joshua PITKIN and Anna STANLEY. He was married to Ruth Case on 1 May 1788. Children were: Anna PITKIN , George PITKIN, Deacon Alfred PITKIN, Melinda PITKIN, Harry PITKIN, Dudley PITKIN, twin PITKIN, twin PITKIN, Melinda PITKIN, Orrin PITKIN, Sophia PITKIN, Ruth PITKIN, Joshua PITKIN.
