She was at various times a member Vermont Historical Society, the United Church of Cabot, and the Danielson (Connecticut) Baptist Church. Hazel had Parkinson's disease. In 1996, her sister, Peg Abbott, provided all of the information on the descendants of George and Hazel Carpenter.

"BARRE CITY — A service of remembrance was held Friday, June 27, 2008, at 11 a.m. in the Hedding United Methodist Church in Barre for Lawrence E. Pierce of the Fortier Community Care home in Barre and formerly of Veeder Avenue who passed away June 24, 2008, at the Berlin Health & Rehabilitation Center in Berlin. The Rev. Ralph Howe, Pastor of the church, officiated the service. Organist Mary Ann Ritchie accompanied the congregation in the hymns, "How Great Thou Art," "Precious Lord" "Spirit Song" and "Hymn Of Promise." Scripture readings were read by grandson, Christopher Bond and Andrew Bond, also a grandson, read a poem "Footprints." Words of remembrance were offered by son, Glenn David Pierce who also read a poem, "A Tryst With Death." Interment was in Hope Cemetery in Barre where Rev. Howe offered Committal Prayers. The American Flag was presented to Alida Pierce, wife of the deceased, by Paul J. Carbonneau. Pallbearers were Christopher Bond and Andrew Bond, both grandsons; Craig Pierce, Erle Pecue, Jerome Goss, nephews and Mike Pecue, a family friend. Following the service family and friends gathered in the church dining room for a time of fellowship and refreshments. Arrangements were in the care of the Pruneau-Polli Funeral Home, 58 Summer St., Barre."

John served as a corporal in the Revolutionary War and was placed on the Washington County, Vermont pension roll for service as a private in the Massachusetts troops. In 1806 they came with their children and a few goods to Marshfield, Vermont by snowshoes, and settled in a deserted log cabin in a small clearing near the Pike Cemetery. At first John and his son John worked for other farmers to secure food for the family. Bemis and Daniel, ages 13 and 11, felled three acres of trees, made leaches of hollow logs, and from the ashes of the felled trees they made salts (potash) by boiling the lye in the kitchen.
