EMAIL US		 bullet Jotham CUMMINGS Captain was born on 29 Dec 1741 in Hollis, New Hampshire. He died on 14 Apr 1808 in Plymouth, New Hampshire. He removed to Plymouth New Hampshire in 1764, having been there the previous year and prepared for his family. Ebenezer Samuel, Esq., Samuel Williams and Jotham were among the original grantees of Plymouth. The charter for Plymouth was granted July 15, 1763. A son says "My mother rode through from Hollis on horse back, brought a child on her lap, and baggage which contained all her furniture to keep house with. Thier sufferings for a few of the first years were most distressing. They had to go to the meadows and pull wild onions and fry them in the fat of bears' meat to subsist upon, without a morsel of bread. My father, with others, went to Concord on snowshoes, with hand sleds, and drew up three bushels of cornmeal each; and for a number of years - as late as the Revolutionary War - I well remember how good a piece of bread tasted, after being without it for three weeks. Most of the efficient men were gone to meet the invading army of Burgoyne, and left their wives and children to be prey to wild beasts and tories, etc." He was a soldier in the French War, 1755, and marched to Crown Point in 1760. He was a lieutenant in a company of New Hampshire Rangers in the war of the revolution. They were members of the Congregational Church in Plymouth, being admitted before 1800. MONTPELIER – Porter H. Dale, M.D., of Montpelier passed away at his home on June 15, Father's Day, surrounded by his family. He was diagnosed with cancer in May of this year. He led an exemplary life marked by devotion to his family, his profession and his community.
Porter, a fifth generation Vermonter, was born on Sept. 27, 1922. He lived his early years in Island Pond, Vermont, the oldest of four children of Timothy Christopher Dale and Emma Hemmig Dale. After completing high school he was offered a scholarship to Wesleyan University, which he attended before returning to Vermont to complete both his undergraduate and medical education at the University of Vermont.
Following his marriage to Mary Lois Westover in 1951 and the completion of his military service, he established a practice in Internal Medicine in Montpelier in 1953. He practiced medicine in Central Vermont for 40 years until his retirement in 1991. During those years he served as President of the Vermont Heart Association (1961–1963), President of the Vermont State Medical Society (1971-1972), American College of Physicians Governor for Vermont (1975–1979), and President of the Vermont Board of Physical Therapy Registration (1957–75). He played a pivotal role in establishing the first Coronary Care Unit at Central Vermont Hospital and served as its Director from 1968 to 1980. He was also President of the Central Vermont Hospital Medical Staff from 1980 to 1982.
Throughout his medical career and until 2006, Porter served as medical consultant to the Social Security Disability Determination Agency of Vermont. His tenure as a Medical Consultant to the Social Security Administration is the longest of any physician in the United States.
Porter was deeply involved in his community. His contributions include: Member of the Montpelier Rotary Club since 1957, Rotary Club President from 1977–1978, Member, Board of Trustees of the Central Vermont Medical Center (1977–2001), Member of the Board of Directors of the Vermont Lung Association (1973–1992), Director of the Howard Bank, Burlington, Vermont, (1980–1989), and Director of BankNorth Group, Burlington, Vermont (1989– 1992). He was the Washington County Citizen of the Year in 1994.
Porter had a love of Vermont history, including the history of his home town of Brighton (Island Pond), and he authored several published works on this subject.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary (Westover) Dale, their four children and spouses, and nine grandchildren: Christopher Damon Dale and Jeannine Taylor of Lincoln, Mass, his son, Nathan; Peter Allen Dale and Jane Sakovitz Dale of Montpelier, their children Adam and Emma; Timothy Porter Dale and Trudy Ann Dale of Lake Worth, Fla., their children Jennifer, Porter, Addison and Zachary; Susan (Dale) Kenyon and James Kenyon of Westboro, Mass. and their children William and Mary. They will be forever inspired by Porter's patience, integrity, humility, work ethic, and commitment to life-long learning. In addition to his immediate family, Porter is also survived by his three siblings, Lawrence Dale of Colorado Springs, Co., Janet Hirsh of Appleton, Wis., and Virginia Aja of Bradenton, Fla.
Calling hours will be held at the Barber and Lanier Funeral Home 139 Main Street, Montpelier on Wednesday, June 18 from 5:30–7:30 p.m. A Memorial Service will follow on June 19 at 1 p.m. in the Vermont College Chapel. bullet Porter Hinman Dale Photo was born on 1 Mar 1867 in Island Pond, Vermont. He died on 6 Oct 1933 in Westmore, Vermont. Porter Dale was a teacher, lay minster, businessman, lawyer, U.S. Congressman, and Senator. He played a significant role in convincing Calvin Coolidge to take his oath of office in Plymouth. Dale later recorded an eyewitness account of this event. The Dales lived in Island Pond in a large house on Tamarack Hill, built in 1893-4.

From Wikipedia, 6/2/2007: "Porter H. DalePorter Hinman Dale (March 1, 1867 - October 6, 1933) was a member of both the United States House of Representatives and later the United States Senate from Vermont.
Dale was born in Island Pond, Essex County, Vermont on March 1, 1867.
Dale attended public schools in his hometown and went on to study at Eastman Business College. Later he studied in Philadelphia and Boston and spent two years in study with a Shakespearean scholar and actor.
Upon completion of his education, he taught school at the Green Mountain Seminary in Waterbury, Vermont, and at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. Dale then studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1896; he practiced in his hometown of Island Pond, Vermont.
Dale served as chief deputy collector of customs at Island Pond from 1897 to 1910, when he resigned and was appointed judge of the Brighton municipal court.
Dale was elected to the Vermont Senate in 1910 and served two two-year terms. Dale later served in the State militia and as colonel on the staff of the Governor of Vermont involved in the lumber, electric, and banking businesses.
Dale was first elected as a Republican Representative of Vermont's Second Congressional District to the Sixty-fourth United States Congress and served from March 4, 1915. He served through the Sixty-fifth, Sixty-sixth and Sixty-seventh United States Congresses until August 11, 1923, when he resigned to become a candidate for the United States Senate. Dale served as chairman of the Committee on Expenditures in the Department of the Treasury during the Sixty-sixth and Sixty-seventh Congresses.
Dale was elected as a to the United States Senate on November 6, 1923, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of William P. Dillingham during the term ending March 3, 1927. Dale was reelected in 1926, and again in 1932, and served from November 7, 1923, until his death at his summer home in Westmore, Vermont on October 6, 1933. He had served as chairman of the Committee on Civil Service (Sixty-ninth through Seventy-second Congresses). He was buried in Lakeside Cemetery in his hometown of Island Pond."
