bullet Hugh BUCHANAN was born on 15 Sep 1822 in Kilfinan, Argyll, Scotland. He died on 11 Jun 1890 in Newnan, Georgia. Hugh Buchanan, one of the most prominent representative men of Georgia, was a native of Argyleshire, Scotland. When he was but seven years of age he was brought by his parents to America, and landed at Montreal, Canada. The same year, however, they removed to Orleans County, Vermont, and there our subject received a good education. In 1843 he moved to Troup County, Georgia, where he taught school until January 2nd, 1844, at which time he located in Newnan, Georgia, and taught school three years. He was admitted to the Bar in December, 1845, since which time he devoted his time to the practice of law. He held every office in the gift of his people, from a membership in the Legislature to representing his district four times in Congress and was appointed Judge of the Supreme Court of Georgia. He was a delegate several times to the National Democratic Convention. He served four years in Phillips Legion as Lieutenant and Captain, was wounded at the battle of Travillians Station, Virginia on June 11, 1864. He was married to Mary Owen Buchanan on January 28, 1847 and by this marriage had four children; Mary Inez who died in infancy, Sarah Catherine who married A.W. Hill, Edward S., and Hugh M. Buchanan.
